Description

In this lesson, students will discuss good and bad manners in different situations. They will organize certain actions that are acceptable and the ones that are unacceptable. Then, they will use the expressions learned to talk about norms and customs in different situations based on their own culture.

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice to discuss norms and customs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking for some real life situations.
  • To learn some useful expressions to talk about acceptable and unacceptable norms and customs in different countries.
  • To raise awareness about the importance of knowing some appropriate manners in different situations.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context, activate some background knowledge, and engage students.

We will start the class by looking at a collage with picture showing appropriate and inappropriate manners. Also, I will aske them to take guesses about the main topic for the class.

Content Preparation (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through situations

Some actions will be shown for students to sort them into acceptable and unacceptable. The actions: - Women pay for the dinner - To put the elbows on the table - To confirm you are attending a party - To call in advance when visiting someone - To bring a present on a first date - To spit on the street - To burp on the table - To say "thank you" and "please"

Language Preparation (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

To clarify meaning, the students will sort some expressions into GO as something appropriate, and STOP as something inappropriate. Some CCQ´s will be asked to check the student´s understanding of the concepts. To clarify form, two sentences will be shown to analyze the structure. To clarify pronunciation, the teacher will show the appropriate intonation and stress. The teacher will aske the students to repeat and practice.

Speaking Task (16-16 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students will be given some situations: - Going to someone´s house, - Going on a first date, - Having dinner at a restaurant. The students will choose one of them and ask for advice if they want to visit their countries. The students are expected to use the structures learned and to have the conversation based on their own culture. Another speaking task, in case there is time for it, we will discuss the importance of being aware of appropriate and inappropriate behavior in different countries. Some personal experiences can be shared.

Feedback (4-4 minutes) • To provide students with some feedback based on their performance.

The teacher will provide meaningful feedback based on the students´ performance in order to improve certain aspects.
