Main Aims

  • To give the students practice in reading for gist, and for specific information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce and give practice in vocabulary related to law & order.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To engage the Ss again after the first lesson

I will stick some pictures of robbers and robberies on the w/b and get the Ss to discuss (in pairs) for 2 minutes these questions: -What are the pictures about? -What do you see in the pictures? Once time is up, I will take w/c FB.

Pre-teach vocabulary (14-16 minutes) • TO familiarize the ss with the vocabulary before the reading

I will convey the meaning of the words(judge, witness, evidence, arrest, trial, court, jury and sentence) by using visuals for some words ( arrest, judge, court) and demonstrating for the words (witness and evidence) and definitions for the others. I will elicit the words. If the Ss do not know some of them, or pronounce them incorrectly, I will say the words they do not know myself. I will ask CCQ's for some words: Witness: Did this person do the crime? What did they see? (they saw the crime happen) Evidence:Can this be a person? Who needs the evidence? Arrest: Who arrests you? Where do they take you after you get arrested? court: Is court a place or person? After I ensure that the Ss feel sure about the meaning of the words, I will drill the words with them both chorally and individually. I will write the words on the w/b, including the word class, and marking the stress. I will ask the Ss to put the words in order on the w/b. * I will give the Ss the Vocab ex1 (in papers) to read it quickly and answer this question: -How many years did the judge sentence the thieves? I will assure them not to worry about the gaps (just read and answer the question) and then I will take w/c FB. ICQ: are you going to fill the gaps? I will get the Ss to work (in pairs) to put the vocabulary into the gaps ICQ: now, are you going to fill the gaps? (I will be monitoring without interfering) As ss finish, I will get them to check against the answer keys (they will be stuck on the ceiling with the Blu Tak before the lesson begins) and I will ask: Do you have any problem with the gaps? If yes, I will deal with it. I will divide the Ss into groups of four and give them the Vocabulary ex2 and tell them: I want you to match between the definitions and the words in the box. -ICQ: are you going to fill gaps? -ICQ: Which words are you going to use? (I will be monitoring without interfering) As time is up, I will get the Ss to check against the answer keys (They will be hidden behind the curtains) I will make sure that the Ss have no problem with the ex.

Reading for gist (4-6 minutes) • To get the Ss to know what the text is about

I will give the Ss the reading text (in papers) and ask them to think of a headline for it. -ICQ: Are you going to read quickly or slowly? -ICQ: What will you do? As time is up, I will take w/c FB and decide which the best answer is.

Reading for detail (16-18 minutes) • To understand the main idea of the text and answer some questions

I will say: I want you to read the text again and answer these questions (putting the questions on my chest). Before handing out the questions, I will ask: -ICQ: Are you going to read quickly or slowly? -ICQ: where should you write the answers? Once the Ss finish, I will take w/c FB. After that, I will discuss with the Ss this question: - Do you agree with the judge's sentence? Why or why not?
