Elementary level

Description

Bringing together vocabulary and grammar regarding time phrases.

Materials

Abc Time phrase handout
Abc Time phrase game (Ss A and B)

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of time phrases, such as: On, In, At, Every, in the context of days and times, such as: On Saturday, In the morning, At night, Every day

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice with grammar pertaining to the time phrases, and to practice speaking, reading, and writing with these terms

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To engage students with the topic of Evenings and Weekends, I will ask them questions such as, 'do they like to go out at night, 'what do they like to do in the evenings, 'do they go out every night, and 'do they like to go out of town on the weekends?' I will tell them my normal schedule and write it on the board.

Exposure (5-5 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

I have prepared a handout with four exercises from various pages in the Student workbook. I will explain the time phrase exercise where they write terms in the correct circles. Then I will pass out the handout. When finished, they will check in pairs. Then we will review and drill.

Task (15-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will have them do the 2nd exercise on the handout (#10). I will put them into 3 groups (A, B, C). I will give the instructions, for step a, then when finished, step b. When finished, we'll do step c, which is for them to ask questions to the class, and then step d, which is for them to tell the class about the Ss who answered Yes to the questions they just asked. As we go we will drill pronunciation.

Task 2 (10-10 minutes) • To allow Ss to match lexical terms with correct words

I will split the class into 2 groups, A and B, and we will put chairs together so a person from A will face a person from B. I will explain the purpose of the Time phrase game is for the A Ss to read a word off the A portion of the handout. The B Ss will read a matching word from their B portion, and both will write in their respective blocks what the other said, until their worksheets are filled.

Language Practice and review (10-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language and check answers

We will then do a WC check; I'll select random Ss to read a few samples from their worksheets until we've done each block aloud. We will drill a bit more on pronunciation.
