Description

In this lesson SS will learn relative clauses and how to use relative pronouns with. I will try PPP (Presentation, Practice and Production) foor this lesson. I want to keep Presentation time less so, SS will have lots of time to work on Productive Skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of defining relative clauses with appropriate relative pronouns.

  • To provide accuracy and fluency in the speaking activities.

Procedure

Stage1 (Lead-in) (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Make an explicit link between the topic of the text and student's life to set the context such as asking SS; "Who likes machines, especially computers?" "Who doesn't like machines, especially computers?" Write on W/B "a technophobe" and "a techie" Ask SS "Are you a techie or a technophobe?" Get some answers from SS and leave these two words on the W/B to use in stage 2 for and example to relative pronouns.

Stage2 (Exposure and highlighting) (8-10 minutes) • To provide context and draw student's attantion to the target language

- Instruct SS clearly about what to do in p.82 in "match the words with a definition" section and give them the page doing in pairs. Set the time for it say 2 minutes. Ten give the answer key. - Do some CQ's to elicit the answers. Ask SS "who is a technophobe?", "Does a technophobe like machines, especially computers?" (doing CQ and getting the answer "no") - Write on W/B the answer; "A technophobe is a person............. A technophobe doesn't like machines, especially computers" (Guided discovery) ask "how many sentences are there here?" (two), these are called (Guided Discovery) relative clauses, because they relate to each other. Ask SS "Can we make them into one sentence?" (yes). "A technophobe is a person who doesn't like machines, especially computers"

Stage 3 (Clarification) (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Instruct SS to do Analysis 1 (1 minute), elicit the answers and give the answer key. Write on the W/B the relative pronouns 'who', 'which', 'that', 'whose' and 'where'. - Tell them to do Analysis 2 (2 minutes), elicit the answers and give the answer key. - Doing the Analysis 3: Write the definition d on the W/B "An antivirus is piece of software you install on your computer to protect it from viruses." - Ask SS why there isn't any relative pronouns in clause d and in which other sentence(s) we can leave out the relative pronoun. (answer. c and e) Form: "A technophobe is a person who doesn't like machines, especially computers" Relative clause + relative pronoun + V + relative clause who which that whose where Pronunciation and stress: 'who', 'which', 'that', 'whose' and 'where' (make them repeat the pronunciations) "A technophobe is a person who doesn't like machines, especially computers" We can leave out "who", "which" and "that" if the relative pronoun is the subject of the relative clause. eg. An anti-virus is piece of software .....(that)........you install on your computer to protect it from viruses. Then give them Speak Out Module 8 part A in p.150.

Stage 4 (Controlled Practice) (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Put SS in Group of 3 to do Practice 1a. Give them prepared piece of papers consist of each words and sentences seperately. Instruct them to keep the overleft papers for later use. (set the time for 3 min. for this activity) then let them to go around and check each other's answers. (1 min). Give the answer key.

Stage 5 (Semi-Controlled Practise) (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

- Do the example with CQ's to get some elicitings from SS such as; "what is a freezer?" (A freezer is a machine ............ keeps food very cold." - Instruct and give them the prepaired piece of papers and ask them to do Practice 1b. - Give the answer key.

Stage 5 (Free Practice) (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Give SS 2 or 3 words, deppending on the time left, (a pen, Ataturk, a car, a bicycle, a mobile phone) and ask SS to write some definitions for these word using appropriate relative pronouns. They work individually.
