Description

In this lesson, the students will practise reading for gist by skimming the text and answering two questions about the text. And also they will practise reading for specific information by matching the sentences. In addition, they will learn new words.

Procedure

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To create interest in the topic of the text

I am going to show a picture to create interest in the topic of the text.I will put the picture in the middle of the board. I am going to ask a few questions. Which language do people speak in these countries?

Pre-Teach Vocabulary (4-7 minutes) • to elicit the words from the students

I am going to show a picture of a native to elicit the word 'native' from the students.And also I am going to show two pictures to elicit the words ' population and relationship'. These words are relevant to the text. I am going to write ' 1.000.000 and 1.000.000.000' on the board to elicit the words ' million and billion). I am going to ask them two questions to elicit the word ' official'. Which language do people speak in Turkey ? What kind of a language is it ?

Practising (10-12 minutes) • reading for gist and vocabulary practise

I am going to give The HO to the students. I want them to discuss the questions with their partners. And then, I want them to read the text quickly so that they can compare their answers. After this activity, I am going to give them another HO. I want them to complete the missing letters. I will show them how to do the exercice. e.g. Cana_ _

Practising (10-12 minutes) • Reading for specific information and vocabulary practise

I want them to read the text carefully and match the sentences.After that, the students will check the answers with their partner.The answer key will be under their chairs. I want them to get the answer key. After that, I am going to give them another HO. I want them to choose the correct meaning. When they finish, they will check the answers with their partner again. I will do whole class feedback by nominating the names

Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • to provide feedback on students' productions

I am going to correct the errors. (air corrections)

Productive Task (7-10 minutes) • to provide the students to do freer speaking practice

I want the students to change their seats. They will work in groups. I will give them 3 questions and they will discuss about them in their groups
