Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of Second Conditional in the context of Celebrities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Celebrities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, I will talk about some of the things that I would do, if I won100 million dollars. I will give several exmamples of things I would do, all with the same premise of me winning 100 million dollars. All the sentences will start with "if I won 100 million dollars, I would ...".

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my students to each tell me 2 things they would do, if they won 100 million dollars

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In this stage, I will write down some of the sentences that the students have produced in the previous stage in the correct form to draw their attention to the TL.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning by drawing two bubbles to represent each clause of the conditional and asking some CCQs such as: is the if-clause bubble's sentence imaginary or real? Imaginary; Is the main clause a possible future, or an unlikely one? an unlikely one. And so on. I will then elicit the structure by asking the students to break down the form of a second conditional sentence with me. The interchangable order of the if-clause and main-clause will be mentioned. Using could + base form, rather than would + base form will be mentioned. Being able to use "were" instead of "was" alongside the "if I were you..." sentence and its meaning will be mentioned here as well. The rising tone of the if-clause when said before the main-clause will also be emphasized.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do exercise A on page 146 in the grammar bank in 4 minutes. They will have 3 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage, I will ask my students to form groups of 4 and talk about what they would want to be famous for if they were a celebrity, and what activities they would do if they could become a celebrity.
