Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide significant listening practice, both gist and detailed, in the context of Scottish clans.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To strengthen Ss vocabulary through both refreshing and introducing new words

Procedure

Warmer (8-9 minutes) • To introduce the context of traditional clothing

What are the traditional clothes of Turkey? Traditional clothes of different countries... In pairs, work together to match the country to the traditional clothes in the picture. Each pair of Ss will be given 3 countries/outfits to match to the pictures on the walls around the room. Look at the traditional men's clothes in Scotland. This is Andy Murray, a famous Scottish tennis player. Last week what did Andy Murray wear at his wedding? CCQ How would you describe it? Kilt (n) - a skirt made of tartan cloth that reaches to the knees and is traditionally worn by Scottish men - “Andy Murray was wearing his kilt at his wedding.” CCQ - Do men or women wear kilts? What else could we call a kilt? What do you think about this pattern on the kilt? Tartan (n) - a tartan pattern connected with a particular clan in Scotland - “The tartan was yellow with black stripes.” CCQ - What is important about a tartan design? (color and stripes/patterns)

Vocabulary in Context (9-11 minutes) • To clarify colors and introduce the rest of the vocabulary for the lesson

Vocabulary pg 32, ex 1 & 2 Ex. 1 - Do it without the CD (red, blue, yellow, green, black, white, grey, brown, orange) - write the vowels on the board, then have them fill in the missing vowels in the HO, as I say each color. - check pronunciations, specifically ORANGE, white and grey - drill any colors that need it. - Write and show stress of 'orange' as needed. Ex. 2 - (pic of 'tartans' in presentation) - Write the 4 Scottish names on a piece of paper, then listen to the description, and write 1-4 beside each name. Check with your partner! Now, look at this tartan: work with your partner to describe it! Use words like stripes, up, down, across... ICQ: What are you going to do? What kinds of words will you use to describe the tartan?

Pre-listening about clans (2-3 minutes) • to give the students understanding of the concept of clan

From reading on pg. 33 "Clan is a Gaelic word. It means family. A clan is a type of historical family group." Use 1.61 as intro to 'clan.' Clan (n) - a group of families who are related to each other, especially in Scotland - “The whole clan came to the meeting.” CCQ - Is a clan one or two people? Is a clan 5-10 people? Is a clan a small family? Can you tell me the name of a city in Scotland? Eliciting Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dundee?

Gist Listening (4-6 minutes) • To give the students basic familiarity with the text's form and concept

Listen to this, and answer these two questions: How many people are speaking? Is this an interview or conversation? Pair check, WC FB

Detailed Listening (9-13 minutes) • To continue learning from the listening text

We are going to listen to the interviews again. This time I want you to answer the questions on this HO. Take one minute, and read the questions on the HO, then I will start the interviews. ICQs Circle the correct answer in the table about each person interviewed. Do we need to listen to it again? Check in Pairs. Do WC FB.

Productive task (7-10 minutes) • To allow the students to communicate about the ideas that they have been interacting with

Do you have a lot of your relatives? Do you have lots of family like a clan? Do you have any particular way you dress in traditionally? Are some colors really important in your traditional clothing? Talk about this with your friends. Ask 3 or 4 friends these questions! Feedback - Does anyone have a clan? Do you have any traditional ways of dressing? Did anyone have colors that are important to their family? Do Error Correction
