To provide gist reading practice using a text about dilemmas in the context of at a crossroads
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
I will greet the class. then tell the class a story and ask the class some questions about my problem. Then I will elicit dilemma to pre-teach. drill and board it. Then I will ask the students to talk to theır partners to fınd some solutions about my dilemma. then I will elicit the answers.
ı will put the Ss in groups.then I will ask them to read the text for one minute and ask them to answer who has the most difficult decision to make. ICQ; Are you going to read every word? no The Ss check their answers with their partners and decide as a class who has the most difficult decision to make.they should give reasons for their opinion.
I will put the enlarged picture on the board and I will ask them to talk about the picture.I will ask the Ss where the people are and what they are doing and how they look .are they happy worried.I will elicit some ideas&then explain that the charecters names are Derek&Dave,&Derek has aproblem.I will put the Ss in pairs to discuss what they think his problem might be.Iwill take some f/bwrite a few ideas on the w/b I won't confirm or reject anything.
ı will ask them to discuss the questions in exercise to with a partner.They have to give advice to problems and talk about an important and difficult decision they had to make.They will discuss with their partners for 5-6 minutes and then ı will get fb.I will tell them they are going to listen to see if their ideas are correct.I will play the first part of the listening only -until the line when Derek says 'well ,Japan's such a long way...I mean two years can be a very long time...at my age'.The Ss will identify Derek's problem and see if their predictions are correct.I will pause the CD and tell them to check their answers with their partners.I will get f/b and see which of their ideas on the w/b closest to yhe correct answer.
I will tell the Ss to listen again and focus them on the questions in ex2 from 1 to 4 only and ask them if they can remember what they heard before. I will let the Ss work in pairs to try to complete qus 1-4.I will take some w/c FB. If they get all the answers,I will move on.If not,I will let them listen to the first section again and check their answers.
I will ask what they think Derek will decide& get some ideas.Then play the rest of the CD.Ss will listen and note the answers for questions 5-8.I will get the Ss to check their answersin pairs and take w/c FB and deal with any answers they missed.
I will get Ss in small groups to discuss the questioninex4.and take some w/c FB.
