Present Perfect Continuous and Present Perfect Simple

Description

In this lesson, the students will be able to differentiate between the present perfect continuous and the present perfect simple in usage. They will have a gab-fill exercise, they will discover the differences in the meanings, and then they will use those forms in speaking about their life changes.

Materials

Abc given to the tutor as hard copies at the beginning of the TP

Main Aims

  • To extend students knowledge of present perfect continuous and the present perfect simple and to give controlled, semi-controlled and freer practice in the TL through the context of life stages and changes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To utilize the TL in speaking about the students' life changes

Procedure

lead-in (3-5 minutes) • to orientate ss to the topic

Elicit the answers to these Qs from the previous reading: 1- what changes has Maria seen? 2- what has she been doing recently?

Focus on the TL-meaning (5-7 minutes) • To consider meaning of the TL

Students are divided into groups of three They are given strips of paper with sentences of PPS, PPC. and other strips with meanings. They have to match the strips and stick them on the wall Then they are given the grammar box as an answer key so that they would check for themselves

controlled practice of the TL (8-10 minutes) • To decide if the verbs in the gaps are PPS, PPC and put them in the correct form

T gives ss a gap-fill exercise and asks ss to work on it in pairs T monitors ss work and draws their attention to the mistakes they make T asks ss to write their answers on the board

Semi-controlled practice of the present perfect continuous (5-7 minutes) • To say what the people in the pictures have been doing recently

T divides ss into groups and assigns a secretary to write sentences T gives a picture and instructs ss to write sentences about what the people have been doing recently. T asks ss to write as many sentences as possible in a limited time. T counts the sentences then announces the winner

Freer speaking and practice of the TL (6-8 minutes) • To discuss the questions about how things have changed for the ss

Ss stay in the same groups T gives out speaking Qs T makes sure that ss understand the following words: immigrants, industries Ss answer the questions T monitors and writes down some mistakes they make in the target language

wrap-up (5-8 minutes) • To give language feedback

T writes ss mistakes on the board and asks students to correct their mistakes
