Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about celebrity worship syndrome in the context of celebrity heroes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of hero worship syndrome

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

* Show photos of two celebrities, Angelina Jolie and Amy Winehouse. Ask the Ss if they are good/bad role models for young people. Get a few ideas. * Focus the Ss on the questions in ex 1. Get Ss to discuss in pairs. Monitor the students. Take w/c FB.

Pre-Reading (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

* Show Ss a visual. Give them a few minutes to discuss in small groups..e.g. where was the photo taken? why were the people in the photo wearing Star Wars costumes? Monitor the students. Help where necessary. Get w/c FB. Record Ss' guesses on the board. Ask the Ss to discuss with their partners which guess is correct. Get and give feedback.

Reading for gist (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

* Regroup the Ss. Ask the Ss to read the article quickly and to choose the best title for the article. Tell them not to worry about vocab. or gaps. Ask the Ss to check their answers with their partners. Get w/c FB.

reading for detail (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

* Give Ss a handout and get them match the words with their definitions. Ask Ss to check their answers with their partners. If Ss finish early, get them write answers on the w/b. Get w/c FB. * Ask Ss read the article and fill in the gaps with the words from handout. Ss work in pairs to check their answers. Get w/c FB on the w/b. * Ask Ss reread the article and put the paragraphs in the right order. Ss check their answers Get w/c FB. Show the right order on the w/b.

Post-Reading (5-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

* Provide each S a celebrity worship questionnaire. Ask the Ss answer the questions individually. Ss compare their answers with their partners. Provide the Ss their results.

Freer-Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide Ss an opportunity to practice speaking for fluency.

If time, ask Ss what advice they would give someone with CWS. Ss discuss in pairs. Take w/c FB.
