Description

This lesson is designed for a group of approximately 30 Vietnamese students, aged 15 to 17, who are learning English as their second language. The class will last for 45 minutes and will serve as an introductory session where students will get to know each other, the teacher, and the class material or syllabus for the course.

Main Aims

  • Build a Comfortable Learning Environment: Establish a welcoming and supportive classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable and motivated to participate.
  • Foster Student-Teacher and Student-Student Relationships: Facilitate introductions and ice-breaking activities to help students and the teacher get to know each other, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
  • Introduce Course Structure and Expectations: Provide a clear overview of the class material, syllabus, and expectations to ensure students understand the course objectives and requirements.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Encourage Communication and Interaction: Use ice-breaker activities to promote student interaction and communication. Encourage students to ask questions and express their thoughts during the introductions and Q&A session.
  • Enhance Understanding of Course Content: Present the syllabus in an organized and comprehensible manner. Highlight key topics, important dates, and assessment methods.
  • Set the Tone for a Positive Learning Experience: Establish class rules and expectations to create a respectful and productive learning environment. Emphasize the importance of active participation, punctuality, and respect for classmates and the teacher.
  • Assess Initial Student Language Abilities: Observe and assess students' speaking and listening skills during introductions and activities. Identify any immediate language support needs or areas for improvement.

Procedure

Icebreaker game (10-15 minutes)

Students pass burger around the room until the music stops. The student holding the burger must stand and select a number.

Classroom Expectations (7-15 minutes) • Discuss the class rules and expectations to ensure a positive and productive learning environment.

Appoint student to write in class notebook Ask students why/how to achieve these classroom goals and values. Ex: -raise your hand -ask questions if you don't understand. -schedule office hours -speak english -don't yell -be a good friend Have students sign
