Reading activity about New Years and Grammar about Present Simple (negative)

Description

In this lesson students will be practicing vocabulary about Calendar before reading. Ss will have a gist reading and have some questions. Then they will read it again for more specific questions. Ss will study Present Simple negative form as a Grammar point.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Different Calendars in the context of New Year's Day
  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about New year in different calendar in the context of Cultural beliefs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of Present simple negative forms in the context of different cultural calendars

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T leads the Ss to the main aim of the lesson.

Pre-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T starts teaching about Calendar Vocabulary. Months and Days January Monday February Tuesday …

While-Reading #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T will give small instructions about gist reading to the Ss. PW to guess the words which are in the reading. T monitors the Ss. Ss will discuss it with their partners.

While-Reading #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Detailed reading for specific questions. T monitors the Ss and takes notes. WC will discuss the questions to each other. Which calender has twelve months? Which calender follows the sun and moon? Eliciting from the Ss for the FB.

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Small Grammar points to remind the Ss. T elicits what the Ss did with the Grammar lesson and T gives instructions about negative side of the Grammar points. While doing Grammar points T won’t be giving detailed expressions.

Feed Back (2-3 minutes) • To give FB if they had mistakes.

To talk about their mistakes and correct them. T will make Ss to correct themselves.
