Materials

Abc • Face to Face Intermediate, 1st edition, Redston and Cunningham

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of I wish/ I hope in the context of borrowing money

Subsidiary Aims

  • To enable students to develop their listening and speaking skills using the information reviewed

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Using google presentations show SS a picture and ask the question: have you been in this situation? Show the next slide and ask them to tell me some advantages or disadvantages of borrowing money from: family, friends, banks or credit card companies and listen to their ideas https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1rg3cJPiW9zIudIrET4N52ySRcZX5YUCbUw6LWkk2Fuo/edit?usp=sharing

Exposure (6-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a conversation

Gist Tell the students they will listen to a conversation with a similar situation. Send 3 questions in a Google Forms document, let them read the questions, and play the audio. Check the answers with them. Questions: 1 What does Briony want? 2 Why does she want it? 3 Does she get exactly what she wants? Answers: 1 some money (£250) 2 She owes her flatmate £100 and her rent’s due. 3 No, she doesn’t. She gets £150. Detail: Share some jamboard slides, one for each student, explain that they have to listen to the audio again, at the same time read the script and underline 3 specific phrases when they notice them: I wish/ I hope/ It´s about time and the verb that is after them. Check the answers in a different slide and mention that we will check their meaning. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1rg3cJPiW9zIudIrET4N52ySRcZX5YUCbUw6LWkk2Fuo/edit?usp=sharing

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MEANING Show SS the next slide on google presentations with the functions in white of the grammar structures and ask them to match them with the examples in colours they only have 3 options . Aswers: 1-yellow 2-pink 3-green Ask them to tell me: When do we use I wish?/ I hope? / It´s time? FORM Using the same slide, have them to tell me: What word/ tense do we have after.... I wish?/ I hope? / It´s time? Listen and show them the grammar structure for each of them PRONUNCIATION In the last slide, ask them to read the first sentence and ask them: do you think that these sentences are the same or different? Explain the difference in pronunciation. Ask to read the second sentence and emphasize that it´s really common in this structure to use the contraction. Do the same with the last sentence and explain they have to stress that part of the sentence and make them repeat. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1rg3cJPiW9zIudIrET4N52ySRcZX5YUCbUw6LWkk2Fuo/edit?usp=sharing

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Share a task with 5 sentences in google forms, have them to answer and then show them the answers to compare theirs. Answers: 1 had 2 pay 3 could 4 didn´t have to 5 thought https://forms.gle/s2SsZsycy9fGeDPj6

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Using jamboard, ask SS to write 1-2 wishes about their life now or in the future. Also, ask them to write two things that annoy them. They can use these ideas or their own: • junk mail • TV adverts • people's habits • background music . • mobile phones • call centres • other drivers • rubbish Give some minutes to share their ideas, comment on them and finally make some delayed correction https://jamboard.google.com/d/1i91WZR1bE3-vqRGhgYaTbdvj__wl_rZJ7Tc7FFMoW00/edit?usp=sharing
