Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of grammar (modals, phrases to express permission, obligation and prohibition)

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide listening and speaking skills using target grammar (modals and phrases that express permission, obligation and prohibition.

Procedure

Guess the alternative (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The ss are shown a sentence on the board. They are to guess the alternative of "had to" which will lead to the following stage of the lesson. The aim is to elicit obligation.

Rewrite the sentences (8-10 minutes) • To provide the students target language and get them to show what they previously know about modal verbs.

The Ss are given ex. 1 They will replace the bold phrases with alternatives in pairs/groups. The text is from previous reading passage but they are not allowed to look at it. Once they finish they will check the answers they have with the text. Then the W/C FB

group the modals &phrases (5-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to find out about meaning of given modals and phrases

The pre - prepared chart is distributed to the ss. the chart is also displayed on the board. the ss are asked to group them according to given titles in groups. once they finish every group will write theirs on the board. then wc fb

fill in the gaps (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to further understand modals and phrases.

excercise for further practice (6-8 minutes) • To allow students practice more

ex 1 is given and an answer key is present on the wall the ss are asked to work in groups and find answers. group that finishes can check answers on the wall. wc fb

listening for general understanding (6-8 minutes) • To listen and understand context of the text

the ss are asked to listen to a text. they must note main points, discuss ideas in groups.

Listening for target language (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice

the ss are asked to listen and note key words. then in pairs/groups they will rewrite the story. afterwards they are given the original of the text. wc fb
