Description

In this lesson, sts will be learning "relative clauses" through some pictures that I will draw on the board and practice what they learn through an exercise on the board.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of relative pronouns "who, which and where"

Subsidiary Aims

  • To make sts understand what a relative clause is and why we use it in the target language

Procedure

Lead-in • To engage sts and set a context

-I will start the lesson by asking the sts this question "Does anybody share the same name with his friend here?" -If there are sts who have the same name, I will ask how they make the difference when they are talking about them. -If there aren't any students who have the same name, I will pretend that I have two friends with the same and draw their pictures on the board.

Introduction of "who" as a relative pronoun • To give Sts clear information about how to use "who" when we are describing a person

-Now, there are two pictures of two girls on the board and they have the same name, Gamze. However, one of them has long hair and the other is from Canada. -Then, under the picture of the first girl I will write 38ºC and expect the students to tell me that "She is ill." I will write the sentence on the board under the picture . -For the other girl, I will draw tears on her face and ask the sts "What is she doing?" So, they will tell me that "She is crying." I will write the sentence on the board under the picture. -Now, I will ask the sts "How can I make the difference between my two friends?, How can I know which one is ill and which one is crying?" -They will probably tell me their ideas in their first language and we will together make the english version. So, I will introduce the use of "who" as a relative pronoun. I will write the true sentence on the board which is "Jane who has long hair is ill." -After that, I will do the same thing for the other girl and write the sentence on the board "Jane who is from Canada is crying."

Introduction of "which" as a relative pronoun • To give Sts clear information about how to use "which" when we are describing a thing

-Now, I will draw pictures of two houses. One of the houses has two floors and the other is burning. -I will give some information about the houses. Under the picture of the first house, I will write "Ahmet has a house."and under the second picture I will write "Ali has a hous." -Then,I expect the sts to do the same thing with these pictures. We will describe the houses together. -I will ask if we can use "who" when we decribe a thing. When I get the answer "No!", I will wait for the answer "which" -Then, when the sts make the sentences I will write the sentences on the board; *Ali has a house which has two floors. / Ahmet has a house which is burning now.

Introduction of "where" as a relative pronoun • To give Sts clear information about how to use "where" when we are describing a place

-Now, I will draw a picture of a building and write "Yahyakaptan Anadolu Lisesi" on top of it. -Then I will write two sentences on the board; *I study at Y.A.L It has a big garden. *I studied at Y.A.L. My brother also studied there. -After writing these two sentences, I will expect the sts to combine these sentences by using relative pronouns. So, I will show the difference between 'which' and 'where' in a very simple way.

Practice • To check the sts' understanding about the grammar

-After finishing the grammar, I will divide the board into four. An ambulance is a man brings you letters. A museum is a vehicle who can fly. An eagle is an woman works in a restaurant. A postman is a building which takes people to hospital. A waitress is a place you can see very old things. A torch is a game where gives light. Chess is a device is very difficult. Market is a animal you can buy food. -The sts will work in pairs to match the parts and make a logical sentence.
