Procedure (45-59 minutes)
Review some of the health related vocab from the first lesson. Ss discuss and recall as many words as they can in groups – the team with the most words wins. Ask groups the vocabulary they remember. Take w/c feedback
Give Ss a reading text including vocabulary and idioms. In pairs/small groups tell the Ss put the story in order. Monitor and help where needed. Once they finish tell Ss to go the w/b with the larger set to put it in order as an ans key. Check all Ss agree. Take w/c FB
Give Ss the definitions in ex 2 & get them to replace the idioms in the story. Use the model on the w/b for FB – Ss can come to the board & write up the correct answers. Check w/c & deal with any questions.
Give Ss the quiz from p 143 – Ss do the quiz alone Get the Ss work in pairs to compare their answers & give reasons for their choices. Take FB on their answers
Ss in pairs/small groups discuss & come up with descriptors for the scores in ex 4 – assess themselves & answer the questions. Take some w/c FB
In groups of 3, Ss arrange the cards in a circle on their desks with the words/idioms face up. Tell them to decide on a starting point. Ss take turns to throw a die & move clockwise round the cards. Wherever they land, they have to define the word/idiom & then turn the card over to see the definition & check. They continue doing this in turns – each time turning the card landed on over, so that sometimes they’ll land on a definition & have to give the word/idiom & sometimes they’ll get the word/idiom & have to define it. Let them play for a while & then collect the cards back.
Show slides to help them visualize the idioms. Check by calling out either words/idioms or definitions & getting Ss to give you required answer.
