Procedure (45 minutes)
Stick the pictures of the TV program "Survivor". Ask "What do you know about the program?" Let them talk in pairs. Try to elicit to survive (v.), and survivor (n.) with the questions "What are they trying to do?" "Who is the winner?"
1. Elicit; a raft(n.) /ræft, rɑft/ What do we use while rafting? (boat) What is it like? (rubber) What do we call this kind of boat? to digest(v.) /dɪˈdʒɛst/ Put the picture of the digestive system on the board, and show how food flows in the body. Ask what this is called. (n) /tɪp/ - For example in newspaper corners there are some small notes for some subjects, ex. for the ones who cannot sleep properly. What do we call these notes? Are these notes short or long? Show the picture of tip if cannot elicit. 2. sweat(n.) /swɛt Ask what happens if the weather is very hot? Show the picture. rubbish(n.) /ˈrʌb ɪʃ/ What is this inside the dustbin? Show the picture a shark(n.) A very big and dangerous fish. What is it? Show the picture sunburnt(adj.) What happens when you stay under the sun too long? Show the picture to sink (v.) happens if there are a lot of people on a boat? Is the boat on the surface or under the surface of the water when it is sinking?(under the water)
Hand Out HO1. Ask the students to match the words with the pictures. Work in pairs. Group check.
Stick the two pictures on board. One picture shows the survivors in the sea, and the other shows the survivors in the desert. Ask "Where are these people?" "Which situation is the most difficult?" Talk in pairs. O/C F/B
Divide the class into two groups. "Sea" and "desert" Give HO2 "Tips" quiz. Work in their groups.
1. Give HO3 "sea" text to "sea" group. Give HO4 "desert" text to "desert" group. Read and check their answers alone. Then check in their groups. 2. Regroup so that one person from sea group, and one person from desert group sit together and form a pair. The new pairs discuss what they have learned from the texts.
Stick the picture of a car break down scene. Ask the students to discuss and write down some tips to survive in case of a car break down. Work in pairs. Monitor and listen for delayed correction. O/C F/B
