To have students differentiate between past simple and present perfect tense
Procedure (37-47 minutes)
The teacher gives students interesting facts about shopping days around the world. They try to guess whether the statements are true or false.
The teacher draws a timeline of a famous person and gives example sentences by using both past simple and present perfect simple. She elicits the difference from students.
Students do activity 4a. They check the answers with their partner then, they listen and check. Next, they identify the tenses of the sentences from activity 4a. First, they compare answers with their pairs. Then, the whole class discuss together.
Students underline the time expressions in the sentences 4a and use them to complete the statements in 4c. They check the answers with their pairs, then they discuss it together. The teacher gives some extra example sentences. Then, students complete the sentences with the correct form of the words in 4e. They listen and check. Then, they ask the questions to their pairs and answer.
The teacher brings a ball to the class and says a verb, then throw it to another student. The student who catches the ball says the V2 and throws it to the another students who will say the V3 when she/he catches the ball. Finally, the ball goes to the another student and that students creates a sentence using past simple or present perfect tense.
They play a game 'Wrong answers only' in groups of four. The students prepare two pieces of paper written I have/I haven't on them. One by one they ask 'Never have I ever......?' They use the sentences in the speaking activity or create their own sentences. They have to answer each question incorrect. If they have never seen a famous person before, they will say 'Yes, I have' and the others will ask questions such as 'Who did you see? Where and how? etc.
