Present and Past Ability
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson the students learn about present and past ability through guided discovery based on reading of the article, "The Human Camera". The lesson will start with brief discussion about what abilities the students can and can't do. The students will then read the article, "The Human Camera", and identify present and past abilities about the character in the article. Students will then complete a brief exercise and then grammar will then be drilled using the questions from the exercise to help ss understand the meaning and form of present and past ability. The teacher will then correct the answers with SS and provide feedback. Two exercises will then be completed by the students to help them practice the target language. Finally, there will be a free activity for the students to practice the language and receive delayed feedback.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of present and past ability in the context of "The Human Camera" article.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of ability

Procedure

Warmer (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The lesson will start by showing pictures on the OHP of people doing activities and I will ask the students to talk to each other about the things they can and can’t do in these pictures.

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation.

Give ss the HO of "The Human Camera" and ask them to look at the title and ask them what they think the article will be about? After a short discussion, ask ss to read the article and underline what the character (Stephen) can, could, is able to and manages to do, and their negative forms alone. I will write "can", "is able to" and "manage to" on the board to help the students.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, pronunciation and form of the target language

Give ss HO of Exercise 5 from Speakout Intermediate Students' Book Pg84 and the teacher will complete question 1 as an example and use ICQs to confirm they understand the question. SS will then learn the meaning by completing the exercise alone and then checking their answers in pairs. I will then use the following two example sentences from the exercise: He was able to calculate 82 x 82 x 82 x 82. He managed to learn Icelandic in a week; to drill the grammar and focusing on the connected speech and the pronunciation of the target language. Q. Does this sentence state a past ability? Q. Is this sentence a negative form or positive form?  was able to /wɒz eɪ.bəl tuː/ He was able to calculate…….. subject + past auxillary(of to be) + ability + simple verb Q. Does this sentence state a past ability? Q. Is this sentence a negative form or positive form?  managed to /ˈmæn.ɪdʒ dtuː/ He managed to learn Icelandic in a week subject + past ability + simple verb........ This will be presented using the OHP. Finally I will review and correct answers with the class.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • Draw student's attention to the target language

SS will complete the Fillgap exercise 6 on pg84 of the Speakout Intermediate Students' Book on HO alone and then compare answers in pairs. Elicit in feedback and provide additional explanations if necessary.

Controlled Activity (4-5 minutes) • To help SS communicate using the target language

The students will be given a hand out showing the pictures from pg84 in the Speakout Intermediate Students' Book. I will give one example answer and use ICQs to make sure they understand the task. The students will then answer questions 1 and 2 from Exercise 7A by marking on the hand out.

Free Activity (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will divide SS into two groups or pairs, depending on the attendance, to discuss their abilities, stating how often they do these things and which ones they enjoy(ed). I will use ICQs to ensure they understand the requirement and then monitor their discussions. I will provide delayed feedback and error correction at the end.
