Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the definite article the, as well as the correct way to use a and an. They will read a text and complete controlled activities. Students will also have a chance to speak with each other at the end of the lesson using the target language .

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of definite articles in the context of new places

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of new places

Procedure

Lead-in/ Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To set the context and clarify blocking vocabulary.

- Show PPT; Ss discuss about new places - Continue PPT. Preteach blocking vocabulary; ask CCQs and drill.

Clarify Definite Article the (2-3 minutes) • To clarify the usage of the and a/an.

- Show PPT. Ask CCQs when needed.

Reading and Matching (7-8 minutes) • To allow students to determine why and when the definite article "the" is used.

- Allow Ss 30 seconds to look at the first activity - Give an example on WB: "the first person______" (answer: d) -Instructions: Read the text. Match the rules to the underlined examples of "the" in the text. Work in pairs." -While Ss work, write answer key on WB. Ask WC the answers.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To give studenrs a chance to practice the grammar they learned in a controlled practice activity.

- Do a demo on the WB -I saw a/the dog today - Lots of an/- English people live there - Clarify that we used 'a' dog because we didn't know or refer to that dog before - Instructions: "Look at Activity 2. Choose the correct answer. Work with your partner." - FB by asking WC the answers. Discuss how they got their answers.

Fill-in Blank Activity (4-5 minutes) • To give students the oppurtunity to practice the TL even further.

- Instructions: "Look at this Activity. Fill in the blanks with a, an, the or nothing. Work with your partner." -FB by Ss filling in Answer Key on WB

Semi-Controlled Speaking Activity (10-11 minutes) • To let students speak about a specific topic in the context of America.

- Hang one of the quotes on the WB ("America is a ...") - Tell Ss to talk with their partner and finish the quote - T writes Ss ideas underneath. Delayed error correction after all 5 quotes are discussed. - T asks students about their answers, and which quote they thought was the best. Also ask which quotes are positive, negative or neutral about America.

If Time Activity (4-5 minutes) • To give student the chance to write their own sentences using the target language.

- Tell students to write 2 sentences with their partner using "the" for each of the 4 rules in Activity 1. -FB by each pair reading their sentences out loud and Ss correcting any mistakes
