Description

In this lesson, students will learn reading for gist by finding out why is Osaka the world's greatest food city?, they will also learn scan reading through one more task. The lesson starts with projection of different kind of food and asking students to discuses what countries do they think the food comes from? and would they eat these dishes? why/why not?. These followed by pre teaching some vocabulary like "sensational, culinary...." and eliciting the form, drilling and showing where the stress in each word. In addition, there is a listening activity where students will learn listening for specific information. Finally there is a freer follow up activity for speaking were students work in pairs to discuss some questions like " do they know any cities which are good for food? .."

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about what's the greatest, most exciting food city in the world today? in the context of world Food

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice through listening to an audio of two people talking about their favorite Food city
  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in discussion through asking each other several questions like "Do you know any cities which are good for food? what types of food are they best known for?"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project the pictures Ask SS if they think the food in the pictures comes from the same country? Ask them to work in groups and discuss (what countries do they think the food comes from? would they eat these dishes? why / why not? Give them 1 minute for it. provide quick whole class feedback. Ask them from which countries they think theses dishes comes from? would they eat it? why / why not?

Pre-Reading/Listening (7-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

tell SS that you are going to give them cut ups of words and its definitions tell them to work in pairs to match words to the right definitions Ask them to check their answers in groups. give them A/K project the list of the words on the board. elicit the form drill and elicit the stress and drill again.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show SS the text and tell them they are going to read a text about the greatest and most exciting food city in the world today? Tell them that you need them to find out which city and why is it the world's greatest food city? give them the text give them 1 minute to read provide quick whole class feedback

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Tell SS to unfold the handout and read the text again and answer the questions below give them time to read ask them to check their answers in pairs provide whole class feedback Regroup students. Show the handout to SS and tell them they are going to listen to two different people talking about their favorite food city and you need them to complete the sentences with the missing words. ask them to check their answers in groups. write A/K on the board.

Post-Reading/Listening (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask them a question " do you know any cities which are good for food? to prepare them for this stage. Tell them you are going to give them a handout with four questions and box of some phrases. Tell them that you need them to work in pairs and ask each other these questions and use the phrases to talk about your food city use ICQs are you going to ask each other questions? (yes) are you going to use these phrases? (yes) are you going to work alone? (no) Monitor them make notes of any errors provide delayed FB on the board if there are no errors. ask them to tell you what did they ask their partner? and what was his/her answer?
