Procedure (40-50 minutes)
Begin by asking Ss, "What do you like to do in a typical day?" Draw a quick schedule on WB and fill it in with student suggestions.
* Tell Ss that the following story will be about the difference between two things. Ask them to write down what the two things that are being compared when they think they know. * Read story out loud. Check for comprehension along the way. * Elicit comparison between a normal day and a vacation. * Elicit definition of gerunds and infinitives. Write examples on WB as needed. * Instruct Ss to write down all of the gerunds and infinitives they hear and check with partners when finished. Reread if needed.
* Put transcript up on WB and invite Ss to highlight all gerunds and infinitives.
Put clarification slides on WB. 1. Elicit which verbs are used as subjects and which are used as objects. Label on WB. 2. Elicit that subject verbs take the gerund form. 3. Elicit that object verbs can take either form. 4-7. Elicit relationships between object verb forms and main verbs in sentence. 8. Give each S a copy of HO1 for reference. Invite Ss to highlight answers on WB.
* Move Ss to new pairs. Give each pair a copy of HO2 and tell them to work together to answer all of the questions. * Pairs can check answers with other pairs, then review with WC as needed.
* Divide Ss into groups of three. Show them a copy of HO3. Tell them they will take a few minutes to think about and write down things they could talk about. Then, they will have a conversation and try to agree on what to do for their vacation. * ICQ that Ss will start by writing (not talking) when they have the HO. ICQ that their goal is to agree on something. Give each S a piece of HO3 and give them 2 - 5 minutes to plan before talking. * When they finish, invite groups to share with the class what (if anything) they agreed on.
