Description

In this lesson, students will focus on reading for gist and detailed information in the context of Holiday Heaven. In the followed up speaking task the students will be provided with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they have learned.

Procedure

Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss watch a video clip about Phoenix Seagaia, a holiday resort in Japan T elicits the topic of Holiday Heaven T writes Holiday Heaven on the w/b

Reading for Gist (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with a less challenging gist reading task

Ss read the text Phoenix Seagaia individually Ss discuss in pairs what they can do at Seagaia Whole Class FB

Vocabulary Pre-Teaching (8-10 minutes) • To highlight the MPF of the new vocabulary in the context of Phoenix Seagaia

Ss match the adjectives to their meanings looking more closely at some new vocabulary after the first gist reading of the text guessing from the context Ss compare their answers in pairs The first finisher puts the answers on the w/b T highlights and drills the pronunciation of the words

Reading for Details (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed reading task

Ss read the sentences and decide whether they are True or False Ss discuss their answers in pairs Whole Class FB

Followed-up Speaking Task (6-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they have learned

Ss discuss the following questions: What do you think of Seagaia? Does this type of holiday interest you? Why?/Why not? T monitors, helps if necessary and collects mistakes T puts Ss mistakes on the w/b and elicits corrections from them

Backup speaking activity (6-8 minutes) • To provide Ss with speaking fluency practice

T shows Ss four pictures of her holiday of a lifetime T encourages Ss to ask her questions about the holiday to get the answers Then T tells Ss that on Saturday evening she is leaving Istanbul and asks them to think of the three best places she can visit, three types of food she can try and three really good souvenirs she can buy in Istanbul before leaving T thanks Ss for their advice and their work wishing them all the best as this is their last lesson together
