Description

The teaching practice 6 is mainly focusing on vocabulary, and the sub aim is speaking. A lot of words will be taught within the context of shopping. There will be a personalised story made up by the teacher to provide a context.

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping

Procedure

STAGE 1 (2 minutes) • Lead In and Warm Up-To make a quick introduction to the personalised teacher made story

Ask the ss "How was your evening?" "Did you sleep well?" Talk for 2 minutes and then start telling the story.

STAGE 2 (25 minutes) • Vocabulary-Eliciting the new words within a teacher made story

1. Tell a personalised story to create the context for vocabulary teaching. The story: I am very tired because of this course, I can't sleep well so I sometimes cannot remember some of the things. Yesterday I went out, and came back with this bag in my hand. I bought a lot of things, and I don't remember their names and where I bought them. Where did I go yesterday? Can you guess? (Elicit Shopping (n.) ). Explain "to go shopping" (v), and "to go out shopping (v.)". Ok I went shopping. I went into a store, and I bought something to write on for the course. I will write everything during the lesson so I bought one with a lot of pages (Notebook (n.)), and I bought something to cut the papers (Scissors(n.)) while preparing exercises for you, and something to stick two papers together when I cut them wrong (Sellotype (n.)). I couldn't see my parents for a long time because of the course so I wrote them a letter, and I needed something to put the letter in to send (Envelope (n.). I also bought it from the same shop. Ask what is this shop? ECDW "Stationer's"(n) . Stick the picture on the board. I came out of the shop, and went into another. My remote controller wasn't working, so I needed to buy something to replace with the old ones, so that it will work again. (Batteries(n.)), I also bought some screws(n.) to mend the broken door, and the tool to put the screws in (screwdriver (n.)). From the same shop, I bought one thing more to connect two devices together. What did I buy? (Adaptor (n.)). Ask what is this shop? ECDW "Hardware Store"(n). Stick the picture on the board. Finally, on the way back home I felt very tired, and I had a headache. I needed something to stop it. I went into a shop to buy it. It has a green white package and the pill is white, and you take it with water (Aspirin (n.)). Because I cut my hand yesterday, I also bought something to put on the cut (Plasters (n.)). Ask what is this shop? ECDW "Chemist's" or "Pharmacy"(n) . Stick the picture on the board. I really needed something to drink, so I bought something including coffeine (coffee (n.)). Ask what is this shop? ECDW "Coffee Shop"(n) . Stick the picture on the board. I wanted to eat something sweet with my coffee, so I bought something made of cacoa and milk (Chocolate (n.)) from a shop. I really needed a shower but I remembered there wasn nothing to wash my hair, and brush my teeth. What do I need to wash my hair? (Shampoo (n.)), and to brush my teeth? (Toothpaste (n.) Ask what is this shop? ECDW "Supermarket"(n) . Stick the picture on the board. I really need to rest and read somethings. So on the way back home I visited another shop to buy something to read. I bought two things. One thing that the daily information is written to read about daily events (Newspaper (n.)), and a thing to read about some fashion ideas (magazine (n.)). Ask what is the last shop I visited? ECDW "Newsagent"(n) . Stick the picture on the board. ECDW all the words in brackets. Show stress, and drill pronounciation.

STAGE 3 (7 minutes) • Vocabulary-Exercise 1 Matching the new vocabulary with their pictures

Stick the pictures of the new words outside the class. Deliver HO 2 (ex.1). Ask the ss to go out, and match the pictures with the names in the handout. Check the answer with their pairs.

STAGE 4 (11 minutes) • Vocabulary- Speaking

1. Stick the rest of the shop pictures on the board. Ask them to work in pairs, and try to find out what is sold in each shop. Ask them to check their answers with their pairs. Discuss O/C. 2. Ask the ss to make their own shopping lists, adding the related store from which they will purchase the items.
