Main Aims

  • To introduce the language used for making requests; such as: could you help me, in the context of having a problem in a hotel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about a conversation between people staying in a hotel and the receptionist in the context of having a problem in a hotel.

Procedure

Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Learners will be engaged in a discussion where they would be asked if they had ever spent a long holiday abroad or in the countryside, and whether they had stayed in a hotel as well as whether they had experienced problems during their stay.

Exposure (7-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening text

- Before listening, each group of students will be provided with two sets of pieces of paper which will contain the two parts of sentences used to make requests. They will be asked to mach each beginning with its ending. - After that, they will be provided with 4 images three of them will be of people on the phone and the forth will be of a receptionist. Students will be asked to guess why these people are calling the receptionist for using the sentences of requests to help them. -Then, they will listen to the recording and while they listen they will be asked to check if their matching was correct. And then, they will check their answers in pairs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the pronunciation of the target language

Each sentence will be checked with the whole class. A student will read the first request, then they will be asked what the problem was and whether it was asked to get help or to ask for something to be done for the purpose of checking the students' concept and understanding of requests. - Then, they will be engaged in a drilling of the request. This procedure will be done for all the 5 sentences. - In the end learners will be given the handout which will contain all the sentences matched correctly.

Grammar- focus (5-8 minutes) • to raise learners' awareness of the grammatical structure of the requests.

- Students will be given handouts which will contain the requests with the verbs underlined. Under them they will fine a set of questions regarding the forms of the verbs which they will be asked to discuss and answer in new groups. - Following, the phrases that initiate the requests "I wonder if / you could" , "Could I/ you", and "Would you mind" will be presented on the board, and the words "Infinitive" and "Verb+ing" will be presented on a larger scale on pieces of papers. This will be done for the purpose of checking answers through learners getting up and sticking the types of the verbs in front of the phrases. - In the end, they will be asked which two phrases are more polite to emphasize the idea that the longer the request the more polite it will be.

Controlled practice activity (5-7 minutes) • To help the students understand the concept of politeness through intonation

The students will first be required to stand up in two lines in front of the board. The board will be divided into two halves, the first half will contain the word polite and the other one not polite. Every two students at the front of the line will have to listen to the teacher saying a request and they will both have to decide if it was polite or impolite. Then they should immediately run to the board and touch the correct side. The first one to do so will be called the winner.

semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • to get students to use the target language

Students will be given 3 jumbled conversations. Each students will have to order a conversation. However one of the lines which will be the place of the request will be a blank piece of paper that the students will have to fill themselves. - then the students who will have the same conversations will be grouped to check their answers together. - Following they will be paired up in a way where pair would have a different conversation. - Then each pair will practice their conversation. - In the end they will perform it in front of another pair and the other pair will have to do the same.
