To provide fluency speaking practice in a debate, interpretations, points of view in the context of adventures and mishaps
Procedure (38-48 minutes)
-Initial discussion of key themes - Post a picture of police men with a boy on the WB that bears more than one interpretation - Ask sts the following questions and elicit interpretations about the picture "It could be a demonstration" "It could be "burglary" "The police might be torturing the boy" while getting fb from sts, ask students to answer the questions on the WB "what are the duties of police officers? "Do police treat people the same in all countries? in order to introduce the "the gentle treatment" which is the main focus of the text
- Pre-Reading Vocab. Ask sts to match words with definitions - ask them to check answers with partners and share with the class - Ask them to read the questions in the HO about certain info in text - are the police going to arrest the boy? Does the writer admire the American police or the Danish?- to give them a purpose / Ask ICQs and get fb -Give them the HOs - Ask them to add some questions about their predictions
- ask students to read the text quickly and answer the following question besides the questions in the pre-reading section "Is the boy treated kindly by the police or not? and how?" Ask ICQs and get FB - Give them the Handouts of the reading text and limit the time to finish - After they finish reading, ask them to check the text against prediction made beforehand. Ask them whose interpretation was correct? - Guess the title from three options "The harsh treatment, The criminal behavior and the gentle touch"
-Give sts instructions to read the text again and mark sentences on the handouts as true/false. - Ask ICQs and get FB. -Give them the handouts. -set the time for the reading 5 minutes and monitor students while reading. - Check answers in pairs - Share answers with class # Ask students to locate certain words in the text. Give them sentences in the handouts (3) about the meaning. Give them instructions + get FB - Ask them to read the text again and locate the words
- Tell sts to discuss their answers to the handouts in pairs - Ask ICQs, deliver the handouts ex. 4 - Share opinions with the whole class - Personalize " Sts' personal experiences with good and bad police officers
