Main Aims

  • To provide reading practice using a text about money in the context of life without money.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of life without money.

Procedure

1. Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students.

Ss best describe their attitude to money acc to three written sentences on the WB. They read the sentences, think a little, every student goes to the WB and marks it.

2. Pre-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible with contextual guesswork.

Showing a picture on WB of Heidemarie and pointing out that she lives without money. Eliciting suggestions from the class (e. g. because she doesn't want to work, she begs in the street, she steals from the shops, etc.) open to their fantasy. - Why do you think she does it? - How do you think she survives? Let the ss share briefly some interesting predictions.

3. While-Reading #1 (3-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading task.

Read to check your predictions. False/True? ICQ: Do you have to read the whole article? No.

4. While-Reading #2 (15-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task.

Detailed reading = Read the whole text. Answer the questions on HO. Elicit "house-sit" = look after another person's house while they are away, like babysit.

5. Post-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with an activity to match verbs in the infinitive.

Ss match (already highlighted) phrasal verbs (verb plus particle). What are the highlighted words?

6. Post-Reading/Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned.

Ss answer questions in their respective groups 1. Do you agree with Heidemarie that …? Why/why not? - all jobs are equally important - most people don't like their jobs - people judge you according to how much you earn 2. - What do you think of Heidemarie? - Would you like to have her as a friend? WC FB - share their conclusions. FB for accuracy - DEC.
