Description

In this Lesson, students learn about the second conditional through guided discovery based on a reading text about review of a reality TV show. The lesson starts with a discussion about Reality TV. This is followed by listening to complete the conversation activity where Ss will listen to the different ways of pronouncing "would". Finally there are some controlled practice through filling the gap activity and then a freer practice where students need to ask and answer questions using the target language.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the second conditional in the context of review about reality show

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in discussion through asking each other several questions like "what would you do if you saw someone stealing bread in the supermarket?"
  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about a review in the context of pick of the month

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Project different pictures for reality TV shows ask Ss about these reality TV and if they know one of them Ask them to tell each other about reality TV programme they like and what they like about it. give them 1 minute for it provide quick whole class feedback ..ask them which reality TV they like and what do they like about it?

Exposure (2-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show SS the text ask them what do they think this text about? after you hear some prediction about the text Ask SS to read the text and check if they are right Give them 1 minute to read.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Tell Ss to unfold the handout and ask them to look at the four underlined sentences in the text and complete the rules with the words from the box ask them to check their answers in groups monitor them to see if they are finished give them answer keys and allow them to check their answers before going to the next stage

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show the handout to the SS and tell them they are going to listen to a conversations and I need them to complete the conversation. play the audio ask them to check their answers in pairs monitor them provide whole class feedback by asking them these questions: How do we pronounce would in the question form? Drill the question How do we pronounce would in fast spoken English in positive sentences? Drill How we pronounce the negative of would? Drill Ask them to read out the first question and its answer and write them on the board "what would you do if your laptop exploded?" "if my laptop exploded, I'd call for help" try to elicit the form from students and write it on the board use CCQs to check the meaning Is his laptop going to explode? ( we don't know) Is it impossible to happen? No so why does he say he would call for help? ( he is imagining what would he do if his laptop exploded)

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Tell Ss that you are going to give them anther practice Read the first example with them and tell them that they might need to change the form of the verbs. let them check in pairs or groups first elicit the answers and drill the difficult sentences

Free Practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Regroup students Ask them a question "what would you do if you saw an elephant walking down street? so they know the structure of the questions they are going to use + and prepare them for the this stage Tell them you are going to give them a list of questions and you want them to work in pairs asking each other these questions. monitor them provide delayed feedback
