Procedure (34-53 minutes)
T sets the context by introducing the word 'high-paying'. T elicits the meaning by asking the following CCQs: 1. Does it pay little money? No 2. Does it pay a lot of money? Yes
T plays the audio and the students listen and read examples on the board at the same time. The examples on the board provide the basis for a short discussion which indirectly stimulated the learners to use the target language. At this stage, Ss are instructed to speak in pairs and explain which of the items on the board is a positive and which one is a negative aspect of having a high-paying job.
T presents a sentences in which the target language has been used. T does so by providing the picture of a tower and a related sentence. The simplest form of the TL (the affirmative form) is presented.
T used the aforementioned example to clarify the meaning through the use of the following CCQs. 1. Will you go up the tower? Maybe 2. will definitely enjoy the view? NO 3. Is there a chance that you will enjoy the view? Yes T, then, elicits the structure of negative and positive forms of the TL. By asking where the subjects are and what tenses are used. T also draws the students' attention to the pronunciation of I will and the weak form in can. Later on, T focuses the Ss' attention on the comma in the first conditional.
T provides instructions on the board by giving an example. Ss choose the correct options and compare answers in pairs.
T gives Ss slips of paper with a single clause on each. Students should walk around and find their matches. Ss read out their clauses in pairs for all to hear and check. T gives feedback by providing the answers on the board.
T presents two other forms on the board. T elicits the difference in meaning by asking the following CCQs: 1. Are you definitely going to buy an English guidebook? No 2. Which is more sure? will or might? might 3. what else can I buy in London? souvenirs, maps Ss provide some examples as well.
If there is time, Ss will play a chain game in groups of four. One makes a new first conditional using the second phrase in the previous conditional sentence. T asks one group to perform for the class as feedback.
T pre-teaches the word beach resort. T asks two questions as lead-in to the reading passage. Ss read and listen. Ss discuss the questions in pairs. T asks individuals to answer the questions as feedback or (if there is a lack of time) T focuses on some mistakes made while speaking.
