Description

In this lesson the students will study and practice some vocabulary for different parts of the house as well as the furniture. They get to review count and non count nouns and use how many and how much to ask questions about a house which they want to rent.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide review of Countable and uncountable nouns in the context of House and furniture

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency, speaking practice in a role play between a tenant and real estate agent in the context of renting a house

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Draw a house on the board elicit what it is called, elicit the word for one or two parts of the house, Ss in pairs write down as many house parts as they can in one minute. Feedback: Check which group has a larger number of words.

Test #1 (5-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Spread the "furniture" hand out. Ss in pairs match the words to the pictures. No dictionary use is allowed at this stage. Feedback: Check the items that are source of problem for Ss.

Teach (11-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Practice the vocabulary from the previous task, clarify the meaning for the unknown ones and practice pronunciation. Teach and review "there is" and "there are". Distribute "Someone who" handout Ss mingle and find the answers. Feedback: How many questions did you answer? [...] Which question was more interesting for you?

Test #2 (2-3 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Asking a few questions about count and non count nouns to discover how familiar the students are with the concept.

Free practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Freer practice to develop fluency in speaking. Role play between a landlord a tenant who is trying to rent the house.

Pack pocket Activity (4-6 minutes) • Freer practice on using the target language (there is, there are, items of furniture)

Set one minute limit for Ss to think what their dream house is like. They might need to think oft: Location Number of rooms Type of furniture Who to live with Ss in pair describe their dream house and explain why they have chosen that.
