Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide practice of "used to" in the context of describing activities in the past
Procedure (38-45 minutes)
The students will have vocabulary concerned with the features of cars to divide them into two columns, "important" and "not important" on the WB. They will have pieces of paper and they stick them on the WB. After they finish, the teacher hides the words and drills them with eliciting the meanings. Feedback: T-WC feedback. The teacher will discuss the students' division of the vocabulary, it varies.
The teacher will hand the students page 113 sheet. The students will practice the "Anecdote" part. In pairs, they will talk about their dream cars and will have the statements in the exercise to help them. Feedback: the students can retell the same thing in groups of four if applicable. The teacher monitors.
-The teacher will elicit a "used to" sentence like "I used to dive to school everyday." Then, he drills the pronunciation paying attention to the short form of "to" in "used to", then he elicits some examples from the students like: 1. We used to dive out of town early. 2. One weekend, we went to Paris. 3. I used to have a love relationship with my car. Then, the sts work on guided discovery to figure out the rule: 1. Subject + used to + ……… to talk about a ………. action in the past. 2. Subject + ………. To talk about a single action in the past. 3. Subject + used to + ……… to talk about a state in the past. Feedback: T checks the answers as WC. Then T introduces the negative and interrogative form of the structure: "I didn't use to; did you use to?" -The students, individually, work on exercise 2 to apply the concepts above on the sentences a-f. Feedback: sts check answers in pairs, T monitors and correct any mistakes. -After they finish, they change the sentences to make them true for them. Feedback: T listens to some of the sts' sentences.
In exercise 4, the students will use the phrases in the box and the grammatical structure of "used to" to compare their life now with their life ten years ago. They work in groups to do so, and they can add more ideas to the phrases listed. Feedback: T monitors and corrects mistakes as WC.
