Description

This is a Listening lesson with a sub aim of exposure of functional language of expressing opinions and speaking to use these functions in the context of cars. Students will be in groups discussing the advantages and disadvantages of owning a car. They will listen to a conversation from the textbook Inside Out and do a gap-fill exercise.They will then focus on stress and intonation of some of the phrases in the text and have a discussion in the production stage

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about expressing opinions in the context of the advantages and disadvantages of cars

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide exposure of language used for expressing opinions in the context of the advantages and disadvantages of cars
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of the advantages and disadvantages of owning a car.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Refer to the last lesson with Kyle and Mohmammad. Ask Ss what they think of owning a car in Istanbul. Is it a good thing or a bad thing etc. Elicit some responses and write on the board. Elicit "Advantages" & "Disadvantages"

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Put the Sts int into 2 groups ( Circles) Have them make a team name. Appoint a writer Have Ss write as many disad & advan as they can. It's a competition! (help with some prompts if necessary) Hand out some markers and have them write up their answers. Look over the answers and compare. The team with the most answers wins!

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Explain the context of the text to the SS Ask Ss to listen to the text and count how many points are the same as theirs. What new ones did they hear.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (6-9 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Give handout to Ss Have them work individually to complete the gap-fill have them check their answers with their partners do a w/c check Play next recording where the students repeat the intonation of the highlighted phrases. Don't look at the hand out!

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Change the groups (groups of 3) A,B;C Have all the A's gather together etc... Give the role cards to the appropriate group (they should be the same) Have them discuss the car they think their role would buy (3 minutes) Change the groups so that there is an A;B;C in each group Give the CARS to each group and tell them they are buying a car together and they have to decide which one. They are the people in their role cards. (10 mins) Feedback with some delayed FB -take notes
