Subsidiary Aims

Perhaps the most important element of any plan is the part where we say what our aims are.Jeremy Harmer in The Practice of English Language Teaching

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (10-15 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

# Greeting and Introduction and welcome the new students. # Write discussion questions on the board and Ss discuss the questions in pairs or groups and then each one shares one point with the class. - What are your favorite stories and why? - What makes a good story?

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

# Make some conditional sentences in the context of storytelling. examples: - If you read a lot of stories, you will improve your imagination. - If we write clearly, the readers will understand the message better. - If the characters are well-developed, the story will be more interesting. - If a person reads a lot of books, he/she will learn new techniques.

Highlighting (5-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the Conditional Sentences

#Underline if clause of the previous sentences with green, and the result clauses with red to divide the sentences in two parts. # Elicit and then clarify the usage of conditional sentence type 1 by highlighting time references in each clause.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the form and pronunciation of the target language

# Review the structure of first conditional sentences (If + Present Simple, Future Simple). # Make examples with singular and plural verbs. # Teach Ss how to use and pronouns contractions : I'll (I will) / won't (will not) # Teach the rising intonation at the end of the "if" clause and the falling intonation at the end of result clause: - if you try hard, you will succeed.

Controlled Practice (6-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

# Provide the students with the instruction for gap filling questions and then hand out the questions. # Pair check # Teacher's feedback on the task

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

# Give instruction for Handout 2, Students should re-order the words to make first conditional sentences. # Pair check # Check the answers

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a set of scenarios (e.g., If it rains, If you study hard, If you travel to other countries, If you speak English). Students create sentences using the given scenarios and share them with the class.
