Description

In this lesson students study a number of vocabulary items related to eating out, foods in general and use them to answer some questions to develop speaking fluency. They review how to ask for prices and reply.

Materials

Main Aims

  • * Listening for detailed information in the context of a phone conversation between 2 friends

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put the title "Eat out" on the board, elicit what it means. Get the synonym eat in a restaurant and write in front of it. Ask and elicit some incomplete questions, Ss are supposed to complete them. In pairs ask each other these questions. Feedback: Better to just have content-based questions.

Exposure (1-3 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a listening text

Ss will listen to a very short text, a message on an answering machine, in which they have to answer three general comprehension questions. (gist listening). Check answers in pairs and have a whole class feedback on the content.

Listening (4-5 minutes) • More exposure to the target language in a listening text

Ss have to practice listening for detailed information to answer some True False sentences. This follows the same theme of the previous audio file. Check answers in pairs. Whole class feedback

Vocab Elicitation (3-5 minutes) • To elicit more vocabulary about Turkish dishes

Ask Ss to introduce some Turkish dishes for different meals of the day and put them on the board.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Distribute the hand out, Ss are supposed to match the name of some dishes with their picture.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will ask each other How much each of the items on the list is. (Ask for the price)

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will work in pair to prepare a menu of a restaurant including, starter, main course and appetizer with the price for all items. They then joint other groups and share their list and ask for prices.
