Main Aims

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a debate in the context of Oprah Winfrey's life.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will place the words of the sentence "Who is Oprah Gail Winfrey?" outside the class and ask students to obtain them and stick on the board with the correct order. Then I will provide the pictures of Oprah Winfrey before moving to the other task.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text by providing a vocabulary included crossword puzzle

Students will be asked to get in pairs and do the crossword puzzle in the H/O with definitions below it and visuals provided both provided as realia and as visuals. After the time is done, teacher will provide the answer key and choral drill the words concerned.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a scanning and specific information task while reading

Students will be grouped or paired. Teacher gives them the text in split paragraphs and titles. Students will be asked to scan the text and match the titles with the relevant paragraph in groups. Meanwhile, teacher monitors. After the given time of 4-5 minutes, teacher will distribute the A/Ks (full text in order), and ask them to solo read. Students will be given 5-6 minutes to read.

Post-Reading (7-8 minutes) • To test the students on the text and clarify and misunderstandings in a pair work

After the solo reading, students will be asked to talk about the cut-up questions. They will stand up, mingle around and ask each other about the text, during which teacher will monitor them. This will allow them to correct each others mistakes and go through the text and vocabulary.

While-Reading (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with a more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

After the mingling task, if there's still time, students will be randomly paired to do the True/False exercise. Teacher will monitor. They will be given the A/Ks afterwards.
