To provide gist reading and scanning through a text about technology, and than ask them to do the exercises to check if they have understood the text.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency with some discussion topics about technology, and teach some vocabulary that has been used within the text.
Procedure (45 minutes)
Ask the ss "what do you think about the technological improvements today?" "How useful are they in our daily lives?" "What has changed in our lives with technology?" (mention fashion, transportation, music, health, and medicine)
1. Pre Reading Ask the students to come to the board, examine the pictures, and put the old technology pictures to the left and new technology pictures to the right. 2. Pre-teaching vocabulary (ECDW) Advance (n) /ədˈvɑːns/: Ask the ss to look at the pictures on board, and ask which ones are a technological "something?" Ask them to find the "something". The ones on the left or right. Try to elicit the meaning. Presenter (n.) /prɪˈzɛntə/ : What do we call the person who is announcing the winners in Oscar Awards? Invention (n.) /ɪnˈvɛnʃən/ : What had Edison invented? affordable (adj) : What do we call something within our financial limits? After the seperation group them in pairs with names "fashion", "travel" and "health".
1. Ask the students to skim the text alone, and underline the inventions in two minutes. (electricity, computers, and network, motorbikes, space travel. Also cars, cinema, television, high-rise buildings, new fabrics, electronic guitar, and amplifier) Deliver the text. Ss check their answers in pairs. 2. Read the article again, and answer the questions in pairs. Deliver HO2(3A). Pair check. 3. Ask the students to read the sentences in HO3 (T&F) in pairs, and decide if they are True or False. Deliver HO3. Check W/C.
Write medicine, education, home, travel on board. Give ss 3-4 min. to discuss under each category, and write them down. Pair work. Ss share ideas, and try to agree on the most important ones. Nominate ss from each pair to share their ideas with the class. Discuss O/C.
