Procedure (34-48 minutes)
- T asks Ss if they can translate their names into English or not. - Ss try and explain the meaning of their name into English. - T puts some examples of placeholders on the board and focus Ss' attention to the names. - Ss discuss in pairs about these placeholder names and the possible reasons for their usage. - T gets WCFB.
- Ss read the four sentences given by the teacher. T writes these cue words on the WB asking which sentences are talking about them. . winning prizes . working from home . fight . dead body - Ss match them with the sentences 1-4. - Ss reread the sentences and underline the names of people in the sentences. - T asks CCQs and expect answers: . Do these names refer to people or things? [People] . Are these names people's actual names? [No] - Ss suggest reasons why these names are used. - Ss read the explanation and use the example names to complete the gaps in pairs. - T provides an answer key.
- T tells Ss that they will read an extract which describes an extremely strange visitor to an inn. - Ss read the text and find the best placeholder name for this strange man. - Ss check their answers in pairs. - T gets WCFB.
- Ss read the text again and answer the true- false- doesn't say questions. - Ss check their answers in pairs. - T corrects two or three students' answers and they go on to correct others. - If there is any problem question T clarifies the answer.
- Ss awatch 3 minutes extract from the movie The Invisible Man at normal speed and 1 minute at fast forward. Then they work in small groups and discuss these questions: . What might have happened to the man? . Are there any differences between the film and the story? . What might happen next in the story?
