Description

In this lesson, it will focus on free time activity phrases. The students will have several opportunities to work in pairs and will practice the new phrases. In addition, the students will have a listening and reading where the students will listen to what Mike and Kim do in their free time.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Quick Review - Review the phrases with like, have, live, work, and study - Write the prompts ( I live… I have…, etc.) on the WB - Ss will work on their own - Ss will work in pairs and say their sentences to their partner and decide if they are the same.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Teach the students the phrase Free Time activities (Things you do when you are not working or studying) - Use the pictures to teach the vocabulary - Then use the matching activity for practice - Discuss in Pairs - Quick nomination to do WCFB make sure they have the correct answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Highlight the different phrases with go: go to concerts, go to the cinema, go shopping - Highlight go out to eat or eat out - Point out that it’s not go to cinema - Highlight the capital letters in TV and DVD - TV= Television DVD= Digital Video Disc -Play the recording. Ss listen and practice. Check the Ss stress the phrases correctly. - Play the recording again, pausing after each phrase for students to repeat individually.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

-Focus the students on the example sentences. Point out the preposition in the first sentence (I play tennis in my free time). Teach the meaning of a lot (I watch TV a lot.) Also, highlight the negative (I don’t go to concerts.) -Ss will compare their answers in pairs and take a few answers from students.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-Focus the Ss on the web page handout. It is a photo of rock stars Mike and Kim Black. -Ask what their band is called (Bad Day) and what type of Music do they play( Rock Music) -Play the recording. Ss will listen and find three things that Mike and Kim do in their free time. Take WCFB quickly

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-Ss will do a True or False exercise on their own and the teacher will post the answers around the room. -Ss will tell what they do in their free time
