Description

In this lesson, students learn about future time clauses through guided discovery as I will set the context and talk about myself and what I will do after I finish my CELTA course. Students will be guided to write the rule themselves and recognize the different conjunctions used. This will be followed by a game where they have to work in pairs to find the two parts of the sentences that go together. Then they will answer a more difficult exercise. After that, They will be given visuals and they come up with sentences using the structure being taught. Lastly, they will discuss in pairs their future plans in ten yeas time.

Procedure

Lead-in (7-10 minutes) • setting the context

I start by telling the students why I am here in Istanbul and what I will do after I finish the Celta course. I will tell them sentences like: After I finish the Celta, I will look for a job in Istanbul. When I find a job, I will rent a flat. As soon as I rent a flat, I will get a pet. if I get a pet, I will name it Dodo. I will not write the sentence on the WB. I will just say them and ask them to say the sentences after me. Then I will put the verbs in each sentene on flash cards in the infinitive form and ask student to come to the board and write the full sentences. 1. finish look 2. find rent 3. rent get 4. get name

Guided Discovery (3-5 minutes)

I will ask students to think of the rule as they should have written all sentences on the WB correctly. then will elicit the rule from them and write it on WB.

Matching Activity (5-7 minutes)

Students are given slips of paper with different sentences but they are not complete. Student A gets the beginnings and student B gets the endings. They try to match beginnings and endings together based on the meaning. Then check with the whole class.

Grammar exercise (5-10 minutes)

Students are given a handout where they are going to put the verbs in the correct sentences. It will be a pair work activity so that they can correct each other. I will be monitoring and give help as needed.

Free actiivity (5-10 minutes) • Talk about future plans using visuals

Each pair will be given a a visual showing people in a certain situation and they have to come up with sentences that best describes what people will do later using: as soon as, after, before, If and when. Once they are done they swap visuals with another pair and so on. Ss they end up writing like five or six sentences. Lastly, I will blue tack visuals on the WB and listen to the different sentences they came up with.

Speaking Activity (5-7 minutes)

Students in pairs use the TL to talk about their plans in ten years time. Then they report o me what their partners have told them.
