Procedure (37-53 minutes)
There will be some photos to elicit shopping and basket to help the students guess the word Nation's shopping basket. There will be some general questions about shopping at this stage to be asked to the whole class. How often do you go shopping? What do you like to buy most?
The Ss will read the first two paragraphs of the text and answer the three questions in exercise 1, which are also put on the board. ICQs: How much time do you have? [1 min] Can you read the whole text?[No, just first two paragraphs] Which questions do you have to answer? [questions on the board] Skimming: 1 min Check in pairs: 1 min Feedback: check the answers as whole class 1 min
In this stage the Ss will have more time to go through the whole text in say 5 min and answer the three questions in exercise 2. Then they will check their answers in pairs in 2 minutes. Feedback: Students will come to the board to write the answers and their erroneous utterances during the pair work will be checked now.
The class will be divided into two groups of A and B where members of each group will have a list of vocabulary items taken from the text. Ss in A work together to define the meaning of their words using guessing or dictionaries, the same goes with B. Then each group will be handed a set of definitions for the same words and this time Ss have to match the words to the definitions. Once everyone is done, people from A and B pair up and they have to explain their words to their partner and s/he must guess the word. The person with more correct answers will be the winner.
Ss will have to discuss the questions in exercise 3 in groups of threes. This task tries to recycle a number language-related areas such as comparatives, past simple tense and future forms. So it's great speaking opportunity which makes the feedback stage quite important. Make sure to have feedback on content, reviewing a number of tenses briefly.
In this optional stage Ss will have to use the vocabularies they checked in previous exercise to write down an answer to the question "What do you think will be a typical shopping basket in 20 years' time? why?" Students work in pair or small groups making a short paragraph about the topic using the vocabulary already introduced.
