Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide speaking practice in a dialogue in the context of shopping and buying things.
Procedure (41-49 minutes)
The students will find 3 things they do in their free time by using simple present question form. This exercise will also enable them to answer the directed questions in the short form of simple present such as "Yes, I do" or "No, I don't". They will work in pairs and find the common free time activities they do. First, I will give a sample orally to explain what they will be supposed to do. With this exercise, they will practise question, positive and negative simple present forms.
In this stage, I will ask the students what they buy when they go shopping. And within the shopping context, I will show 10 pictures of things to buy from a market. They discuss with their partners if they buy those things or not.
I will elicit the correspondent words which I showed in the previous stage on the board and the students will work in pairs and match the words with the pictures on the board. And then they will report back to the whole class.
They will work in pairs and ask the pictures each other for example; "What's number 3?""A map". They will make dialogues aiming to teach the students target objects. The focus will be on the meaning. I will make a sample orally to show the students process. After students' dialogues, I will ask concept check questions to check the meanings of the new vocabularies.
I will highlight the lexis related to shopping on the board. I will focus on the meaning first, form, and pronunciation respectively. I will highlight the form of each word; for example ; "magazine" : noun + singular. I will show the stress on each word to make the students pronounce the words properly. For example : "postcard" : stress is on the first syllable. I will also use both group and individual techniques.
I will disperse sheets for the listening activity, the students will listen to dialogues in a market. The main aim will be to find out the price of the products in a market. With this fill in the gap activity, the students will focus on recognising the target language in the context. After listening and filling the gaps, they will check their answers in pairs. And I will show the answer key by reflecting on the board.
In this stage, I will highlight the new adjectives "this, that, these, those" by using the new words they learnt in the previous stages. For example; I will hold a magazine and say "This is a magazine", and I will show a newspaper on the table and say "That is a newspaper". I will do the same thing for the plurals of the new words for example: "These are batteries" or "Those are sweets". I will also focus on the pronunciation of "this, that, these, those". And the students will practise the target language in pairs, they will ask the pictures each other. For example : "How much is this magazine?" "It is 3 pounds" or "How much are those batteries?" "They are 8 pounds."
In the final stage, I will give an exercise sheet to the students and they will fill in the gaps with "this, that, these or those". After doing it individually, they will check their answers with their pairs. I will give them the answer key to check their answers.
