ICELT group level
Main Aims
-
Trainees will be focusing on the topic of language awareness; what does it mean and how do teachers and students acquire it.
Subsidiary Aims
-
Expose trainees to different forms and get them analyze language points they might use in their classes.
Procedure (49-76 minutes)
- Group trainees to form three groups of four. - Get each group a definition to fill in. -Check with them to start the session. - Discuss in groups the meaning of the definition and analyze it.
-Trainees will get three jumbled questions and will be asked to arrange them. - Write the questions on the board. - Elicit the answers of the three questions. -why analyze --- to identify problems - what to analyze ----- meaning / form / use(function) - the difference (form- function)
- write the example (I always drink coffee in the morning ) -Elicit the form, and the use (function)
- Give trainees (analyzing a tense) worksheet. - Get them do the activity in groups. - Monitor -Get feedback
- Get trainees in three groups of four - give each group a set of the same target language -ask them in groups to analyze the language form, meaning and function. -regroup to form three groups again each trainee with a different target point. -get trainees explain the meaning of the target language so the rest of the group guess the form, then they all decide the function. -get feedback.
- Get each trainee a strip of paper - Ask them to read quietly, then make sure they understand the meaning of their sentences, and underline the words that signaled the meaning. - Trainees then need to paraphrase the sentences to explain the meaning and others should guess the exact words mentioned.
- Get trainees in their new groups think about their own teaching -Ask them to share how they can help learners raise their language awareness. - Elicit ideas on the board. Discussion questions: Can we become better language users or learners or teachers if we develop a better understanding? And can we gain other advantages? How? -Suggest (Mad libs)
