Main Aims

  • To provide review and clarification of present perfect, "yet" and "already" in the context of situation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of situation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I begin with a quick greeting and casual conversation about recent activities. I will ask them " Have you watched any interesting movie this week?" or "Have you done anything interesting since the last class?"

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I present a short story or situational dialogue that involves experiences or recent action.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I write the structure of the present perfect tense on the board. Then I highlight examples from the story.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will explain that "yet" is used in negative sentences and questions to indicate that something hasn't happened but is expected to happen. Then I explain that "already" is used in affirmative sentences to indicate that something has happened sooner than expected(A timeline will be drawn). Also I write some other sentences on the board and highlight the use of "yet" and "already". I will show pictures depicting actions(e.g., eating breakfast, doing house chores) and create sentences using "yet" and "already". The question form and the place of "yet" and "already" in a sentence will be taught.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do exercise B on page 133 in the grammar bank in 2 minutes. Then they will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask students to work in pairs to have a short conversation using present perfect with "yet" and "already". Each student have two minutes to think of 2 activities they have done recently and 2 activities they haven't done yet. They then take turns asking each other questions and answering using "yet" and "already".
