Elementary level

Description

The students will attend this lesson which lasts about 45 minutes. They will be introduced to some vocabulary through some pictures in order to get them into the context of the text which they are going to work on later in the lesson. This will help them understanding the text and choose the right reading sub-skills required to do some of the exercises.

Materials

Abc *Tick the word/phrases you know? ex 1a, p 22.
Abc * What is his job? Same Dan`s photo ex 2a, p 22.
Abc *Read and check your answers? ex 2c, p 22.
Abc *Match words/phrases? ex 1b, p 22.
Abc * Tick (true) or (false) and correct the (false)? ex 3, p 22.
Abc * Guessing the times of these things? ex 2b, p 22.

Main Aims

  • To learn how to do reading sub-skills with a text in case the students need to look for general understanding (gist-reading), or try to find specific information (scan-reading) in the context of a professional daily routine.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To familiarise the students with some vocabulary used mostly in everyone`s daily life.

Procedure

Lead-in/Elicitation (5-10 minutes) • To check student`s knowledge about some vocabulary

*T will show pictures and elicit students what people in these pictures do, *T teach them those who they do not know, * T shows the stress where the stress is in some of these words/phrases, * T asks three CCQs, a- Do people usually have breakfast in the afternoon? b- Do people usually have lunch in the morning ? c- Do people usually get up at night ?

Match words and phrases. (2-4 minutes) • to help them using these vocabulary with the right actions

T asks them to match these words/phrases from 1a, T checks with them by saying number and Ss say the right words/phrases.

Job Prediction/ Sam Dane. (4-6 minutes) • To trigger student`s mind about what TL will be.

2 (a) -- T project a photo of Same Dan, and ask about his work, Ss guess his job and that could be done in pairs, T asks CCQs after guessing Correctly, Do he drive a taxi ?

Guessing some actions times (8-10 minutes) • To remind them when they read the text and come up with this vocabulary

2 (b)-- T asks students to guess in pairs about these times, Ss choose the matching times with these actions. 2 (c)-- T asks them after guessing to read the interview ( scan reading), Ss check their answers and correct them.

True/False and correct the false sentences (4-10 minutes) • To allow students to use the technique of detailed reading.

T asks them to do true /false activity, and correct the false one, T sets time to do that, T asks some ICQs: Do we just tick the correct sentences? Do we just tick the wrong one and leave it ? Ss use special way of reading (intensive reading).

Reading skills/ Feedback (2-5 minutes) • To clarify the way should be used when looking for information within text.

Reading sub-skill (1)--(scan reading), it is preferred to be used when looking for specific information when reading texts, Reading sub-skill (2)--(gist reading), it is recommended to be used when looking for a general understanding of texts, and ne need for every detail.
