The Gender Gap

Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice listening and speaking in the context of " Gender Gap" They will listen to two related videos and practice speaking during the lead-in; while giving he answers and in the free practice section.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and gist in a listening activity in the context of "the gender gap".

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of some lexis in the context of "the gender gap"
  • To provide fluency and accurate speaking practice in a debate and conversation in the context of the gender gap
  • To provide a clear pronunciation of the lexis they learnt during the practice.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T writes the topic " The gender gap" on the w/b. - T asks the Ss what the topic is about and elicits some answers. -T projects some jobs on the board and asks which ones are usually preferred by women and men. - Ss work in groups to talk about the subject and write their answers on the w/b.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T hands out a worksheet related to the listening text. Ss read the questions first and listens the audio twice to answer the questions while listening. Ss discuss their answers in pairs and T elicits the answers in a w/c activity. T gives feedback on the w/b and projects the answers at the end of this part.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gives the Ss a worksheet which has both a pre-listening and a while-listening part. Ss do the pre-listening part to practice the target lexis for the following listening task in groups T projects the answers on the w/b and drills pronunciation both chorally and individually.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss read the questions before watching the video. Ss watch a video and answer the given questions in the worksheet while watching/listening. Ss check their answers in groups. T hands out the answer key for Ss to check. S/he gives feedback while they are checking.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T gives each pair two pictures with some questions written under them. Ss look at the pictures and answer the questions first in pairs, then in groups. T elicits some answers and gives feedback in the end of the activity.
