Teaching Practice 3
Beginner level
Description
Main Aims
-
To provide writing practice of a postcard telling about the student's holiday
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide students with a structured postcard that helps them write their own later, and to teach them how to use and & but.
Procedure (35-41 minutes)
Ask the students about the meaning of "holiday" then illustrate it with examples. Ask them where to and when they go on holiday so that you make sure they understand the term. You can tell them that you usually spend your holiday at the seaside, and add some sentences to describe it.
1. Tell the students they are going to read a postcard and explain what a postcard is, you can show a real one as an example at this stage. 2. Explain the meanings of these words on the WB: a beach, music, friendly, cheap. Hand page 56 to the students and ask them to work in pairs. Set five minutes for the task and tell them to read the postcard and answer the questions below. You can check answers on the board, using OHP if available. 3. Present the use of and & but to the students. Illustrate that "and" is used to connect two positive sentences, and but to connect one positive sentence to a negative one. Use simple examples like: "I like tea and I like coffee" vs. "I like tea, but i don't like coffee." Then, hand them page 57 and read the examples in it, and ask them to do part b in pairs. They can come and do it on the WB after they have finished to check answers. 4. Read the instruction in exercise 5 and make it clear, then have the students do it in pairs, let them work with a new partner if possible. After they finish, ask some of them, especially early finishers, to write the correct answers on the board. 5. Unless you don't have time, read the instruction of exercise 6, and let the students do it, or you can do it as a whole class activity on the WB using OHP.
Read the instruction in exercise 7 for the students. Make sure that they understand what to do. Hand them the postcard template and tell them to write their own postcards individually. After they finish, ask them to read their partner's writing and check. Encourage them to use the TL whenever they discuss their work with their partner.
