Description

In this lesson, the students will practice scanning for specific information through reading a text about hobbies and interests. They will focus on some vocabulary in the text.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading in the context of hobbies and interests.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of interests and hobbies lexis in the context of people's interests and obsessions.

Procedure

Lead-in (6-8 minutes) • Get the students interested in the topic of interests and obsessions.

The teacher tells the students about his own interest (collecting books). The teacher hands out the lead-in questions and asks the students to work in pairs and discuss the three questions. ICQs - The teacher asks the students in brief about their partners' interests.

Pre-reading (4-6 minutes) • Students get closer to the text and review some vocabulary

The teacher asks the students to look at the list of vocabulary in exercise 2 and discuss in pairs which of the things people collect. The elicit some ideas, and asks the students to add more things that people collect.

Reading 1 (3-4 minutes) • Students read for gist.

The teacher hands out the text and asks the students to give paragraphs numbers (1-6). They read quickly and match the items in the previous handout with the paragraphs they are mentioned in. The students check with their partners, and then the teacher provides an answer key.

Reading 2 (5-7 minutes) • Students scan the text for specific information.

The teacher hands out the table in exercise number 3. The students work in groups of 3 to complete the table. The teacher gives instructions : 1. one minute reading then complete the first column. 2, one minute reading then complete the second one. pens down. The teacher hands out an answer key and asks the students to check their tables.

reading 3 (7-9 minutes) • Students read for specific vocabuary.

The teacher hands out the puzzle activity in exercise number 4. The teacher gives instructions and sets a time limit. Students work in two groups to complete the puzzle. When students know the hidden word they shout it. Answer key is provided for check.

Post-reading (8-10 minutes) • Students practice writing about intersts.

The teacher asks the students to work individually and write a short paragraph about the weirdest obsession they have ever known. What is it ? who was the person? Why is it weird? Students then stick their paragraphs on the walls and read other students' paragraphs and comment on them.
