Pre-Faculty level

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of vocabulary items in the context of sensory abilities and technology

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of sensory abilities and technology using target vocabulary

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher (T) displays MAT2 Slide 1 and asks students (SS) to find the relationship between bear, dog and shark. After eliciting the answer "smelling ability" and "sensory ability", T moves on with the next slide and tells SS to discuss the questions in groups for 3 minutes.

Test #1 (5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language and to test the effectiveness of the following activites used while teaching vocabulary

T shows Slide 3 and tells students to read the paragraph and asks if they have read the book mentioned and if they know any technology which extends humans' abilities. T explains that they will play Quizziz (MAT5) and see the words that will help them while discussing the senses and technology and listening to the chapter's audio in the following lesson. Teacher checks the students' success on the report and sees the questions that students have difficulty in the reports section.

Teach (20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage and practice target items

T continues with Slide 5 and tells students that they will play bingo. T explains students that they need to guess the word as T reads the definition and shows visuals on the slides 6-20. T expresses that students need to cross each word on a horizontal line to shout "bingo". T shows the coloured squares on slide 5 and asks ICQs. ICQ1: Which one is bingo, green ones or red ones? -Green. ICQ2: What do you do when you find a word? -Cross it on the paper. Teacher goes over the slides and reads each word's definition on MAT6 word list. T must follow the order on the document. After ceompleting the game, T goes back to Slide 6 and elicits the answers from students. T shows SS MAT4 and tells them to fill the gaps with the following words in their correct form. T directs students to MAT4 which is shared with them on Google Classroom. T monitors SS and check if they have any problems with form. T continues by showing the answers on the same slide. ---------------------(If time allows) T moves on with slides 22-23 and tells students to complete the activities A & B on page 126. The answers are embedded on the slides. Students continue with part C (Slide 24) on pages 126-127. They match the words with their definitions on the board and write them on their books.-------------------- T shows students the example sentences with the target items in bold and performs choral and individual repetition for pronunciation. T divides each word into syllables and have students repeat each syllable, then say the whole word. For each syllable, T claps their hands and asks students to follow this. T identifies the problematic words and reads aloud those sentences and drills again.

Test #2 (5 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T continues with slide 25 and tells SS that they will play Quizziz again. T compares the scores with the previous ones. T writes down the words on the board and asks each group to discuss the words' meanings.

Free practice (10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T presents MAT3 using the link on slide 26 and tells students that they will have a group discussion. Students should use the target words in their answers. T chooses a member from each group and tells them to use the squeeze and play toy on each table. T sets three different timers on the board. T sets 30 seconds for thinking time and 2 minutes for discussion. T monitors and joins the discussion if SS are silent. T identifies mistakes and gives feedback on the errors made by students.
