Lesson 3: Grammar
Pre-intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
This is a grammar lesson focusing on present perfect and present perfect continuous using 'for' and 'since'.
Subsidiary Aims
-
Students will have semi-controlled speaking and writing practice activities.
Procedure (32-46 minutes)
I will put 6 questions on the board numbered 1-6 respectively. I will pass the dice around and have students roll it and answer the question associated to the number they roll. They should answer using present perfect continuous which I will explain prior to passing out the dice. I will begin to demonstrate the expectation and pass. After one student has answered, he/she can pass the dice and the next student rolls. The amount of turns will rely on the class population.
First I will give some examples of past facts, present facts, and present perfect facts. Then I will give HO_1 to the class. I will call on different students to read the sentences in the table. They should be able to tell me in present perfect how long something has gone on. In exercise 2, I will ask students to underline the main verbs in column 3 of the table. I will write the sentences on the WB so the students will understand and someone can come up and underline it from there. In pairs, students can discuss the questions I will write on the WB. I will ask the WC to answer if possible.
Briefly go over the lesson expectations as they pertain to the usages of for (a period of time) and since (a point in time). I will write the words on the WB and two examples using each of them in a sentence. "She's been living with her friend for three years". "I've been gone away from home for two weeks".
I will explain the exercise and write the first (a) on the board. I will write the statement and answer in the context I expect from students using "for" and "since". They also need to identify if the verb describes a state or as single/repeated action. I will then pass out HO_2 containing exercise 3 from page 80 in the SB and have students independently answer the statements given. After they have completed the task, I will ask them to compare their answers with theirs partners. After, I will write a-h on the WB and call on students to tell me if each verb is a state or an action.
Students will chose one of the statements from exercise 3 and ask it as a question. Ex, statement (a): a foreign person you know will become "Do you know any body foreign?" Students should the ask "How long have you known him/her?"
I will use the flash cards from HO_3. Students will be divided into pairs and given a set of flash cards. I will demonstrate by having a student read a card aloud to the class and answering the questions using present perfect. FB will follow and conclude the lesson.
