Main Aims

  • To improve students' reading comprehension skills.
  • To enhance students' ability to make predictions and inferences based on given information.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expand vocabulary related to sports and athletes.
  • To develop students' speaking skills through pair and group discussions.
  • To practice creating motivational quotes, fostering creativity and personal connection to the text.

Procedure

Icebreaker (0-1 minutes) • To energize the class

The teacher asks students to find an adjective that starts with the first letter of their names.

Warm-up (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks "What qualities do you think make an athlete more successful?" Students have 1 minute to think and 2 minutes to discuss with their friends.

Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To activate prior knowledge and generate interest in the topic.

In pairs, students write down the name of a famous sportsperson that they think others will know. They'll also write 5 clue sentences for that person and ask their pair "Can you guess who I chose?" Teacher can do one as an example.

Pre-Teaching the Vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • To ensure students understand key vocabulary before reading.

Put students into small groups. Pre-teach genetic makeup (our natural abilities or what we inherit from our parents). Students discuss which ones are the important ones. Monitor and contribute to the discussions. Note any errors. As a class, different groups compare their ideas from Exercise b. Find out if the class can agree on the most important characteristics. Teacher can tell his/her feedback here.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher gives some basic facts about the athletes from the text and asks students to make predictions. "What do you think is said in the text about ......?"

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Teacher prints out the text and cuts it in half vertically, giving one half to student A and the other half to student B. Students discuss and complete comprehension questions (Activity 1.e).

Post-Reading (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will do 1.e activity from their course book. They should discuss the questions with their groups and teacher will ask for representatives to report ideas back to the class.

Production (4-5 minutes) • To help students relate the text to their personal experiences and practice their creative and writing skills.

Inspirational Quote Creation: Students with their groups will create a motivational quote inspired by the athletes and explain why they chose that person.

Feedback (0-1 minutes) • To provide feedback and address any common mistakes.

Teacher gives feedback based on observations during the production activity.
